Hydroseeding

Hydroseeding and straw mulching are effective ways to establish lawn grass or revegetation. They work for everything from a backyard lawn to exposed batters because the method is about creating the right growing conditions, not the size of the area.

Hydromulching is a spray-applied mix applied in one step. It combines seed (when specified), fertiliser, cellulose fibre mulch, water, and a tackifier. As it dries, it forms a protective blanket that holds moisture and supports consistent germination. A green dye is commonly used so coverage is even and easy to check.

Straw mulching is a heavier surface protection method. The area is typically seeded and fertilised first, then straw is applied to create a thicker mat with strong moisture retention. It can also be tacked down where required.

• awkward areas where turf is difficult to lay

Establishment is largely about watering and timing. Smaller residential areas establish quickly with regular watering. Larger sites can take longer and often rely on rainfall and seasonal conditions.
